Keratin-like results without the toxic fumes

Last week I went to get my hair colored, and as I was sitting under the heater waiting for the blonde to bloom, my nose suddenly got all stuffed up and my eyes started to itch and burn. My colorist works in one of those studio spaces so it was just the two of us in her tiny room, but because of COVID her sliding glass door has to remain open—and so does everyone else’s. As it turns out, a keratin treatment was in process across the hall, and although I never experienced this reaction before, that’s probably because pre-COVID, these services were usually performed behind closed doors with extra ventilation.

Since I’m obviously not a candidate for a keratin treatment (and I’m probably not the only one who has this sort of reaction to the fumes), I wanted to call your attention to UNITE’s RE:UNITE Silky:Smooth System. This three-step DIY smoothing system starts with the Active Wash Shampoo to thoroughly cleanse and balance both the hair and scalp while depositing a heat-activated polymer that locks in moisture and minimizes the effects of humidity. The next step is the Hydrating Complex that’s both a strand-smoothing and softening conditioner as well as a second source the aforementioned heat-activated polymer that keeps frizz at bay.

The third and final step is the leave-in Heat Activator Spray, which offers heat- and UV-protection plus even more polymer that forms a protective seal on each and every strand as you blow-dry or flat-iron your hair. The results may not last as long as a salon-based keratin treatment, but you’re definitely good for several washes, which can net out to several weeks if you stagger your shampoos.

Personally, I think is this well worth it to get smooth strands without parabens, sulfates or sodium hydroxide—and no noxious odors. Not only will be you sparing yourself from harsh fumes that definitely aren’t doing anyone’s health any favors, you’ll spare unsuspecting salon patrons around you as well.
