High-tech at-home hair color

High-tech at-home hair color

Although the cancellation of large-scale gatherings continues due to the seemingly never-ending pandemic, the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) will go on. This expo always serves up an array of exciting new beauty technologies, and the first one to catch my attention was L’Oreal’s Colorsonic.

Poised to take DIY hair color to the next level (and a CES 2022 Innovation Award honoree), this device may look like a cordless flat iron but it’s designed to take the guesswork out of mixing and applying color at home. Five years in the making, it mixes a precise amount of developer and color formula right there within the wand, and dispenses the proper amount to be applied to the hair with a nozzle of spinning bristles.

The first step is selecting from the 40 shades available on the forthcoming Colorsonic website. and the ammonia-free color is delivered directly to your door. When you’re ready, all you have to do is pop the cartridge into the device and run the bristles from your roots to ends. (The starter set also comes with an attachment for those whose hair falls beneath their shoulders.)

Similar to other at-home color, once it’s on all you have to do is wait 30 minutes before washing your hair and going on your merry way. No trip to the salon (or gloves—yay for sustainability!) required.

Where was this two years ago when we were on lockdown? Regardless, it just might be a savior for those who rely on single-process color and go into self-imposed lockdown—although hopefully we’re not still talking about this next year when the Colorsonic hits store shelves.
