Is a blunt cut right for you?

We’re headed to a much-needed haircut this afternoon, so naturally we have a few different potential style updates on the brain. Last time we went to go see our beloved L.A. at Peter Coppola Salon, she told us to let our short hair grow out a bit so she could take our coif in a new direction. To ease the transition, she tucked away her scissors and took out a razor instead, and we were super-happy with the result, even if it was only stage 1.

We always turn to the internet for inspiration before a haircut, and start with celebrities. While we were surfing this morning we noticed a trend other than pixies (we couldn’t be happier about this one), and we found ourselves looking at blunt cuts… They look amazing when properly styled (by a pro in the case of Hollywood starlets) but perhaps you’re wondering if this style could work for you. If so, you’re in luck, because we have the inside scoop on blunt cuts from Timothy Wandrey, Director of Salon Education and Stylist for New York City’s Cutler Salons.

Jennifer Aniston, Karlie Koss, Olivia Munn, Nicole Richie and Mary Kate Olsen are all rocking this look right now, and for good reason. “Blunt cuts make the hair look fuller. When you’re going shorter, getting rid of a lot of those layers gives it a sleeker, healthier look,” Wandry explains.

And if you’re thinking of taking the plunge, there’s no time like the present. It’s ideal for cold weather, when there is less humidity and it’s easier to style without looking too triangular, he adds.

When going blunt, Wandry explains that your face shape is a good guide for length. “The shoulder length, blunt cut is best for round faces because it elongates. If you have a longer face, you may want to add a few layers that fall around the cheekbone area to widen the face.”

If you’re thinking of changing up your style, would you go blunt?

UPDATE: How amazing is this cut?!?!? We’re beyond thrilled. If you’re looking to update your look and your stylist isn’t cutting it (we couldn’t resist), book an appointment with L.A. pronto!
